There are many reasons couples decide to get divorced, and each marriage is unique. But it seems there are cities in each state where the possibility of divorce is more likely.

24/7 Wall St. recently reviewed data from the U.S. Census Bureau to determine the city in each state with the highest percentage of divorces among those 15 years and older.

In Kentucky, that is Lawrenceburg. The divorced population in Kentucky is 13.2 percent, but in Lawrenceburg it is 22.2 percent. In Indiana, Westville is the divorce capital. The statewide divorced population is 12.7 percent, but in Westville it is 22.7 percent.

Interestingly, the divorced population in Westville is a higher percentage than the percent of married people in Indiana, which is 20.2 percent. The married population in Kentucky is much higher than in Indiana, at 50.2 percent.

Factors in a divorce

For many couples money can be a factor in a divorce, and the divorced population in Kentucky and Indiana may be reflected in each state’s financial data. The median household income is $9,000 higher in Kentucky than it is in Indiana. In Kentucky, 6.6 percent percent of households earn less than $10,000, compared to 8.2 percent in Indiana.

The American Psychology Association claims that 40 to 50 percent of U.S. marriages will end in divorce, but data from Bowling Green State University showed that in 2016, the divorce rate reached its lowest point in 40 years.

Regardless of your city of residence or financial situation, there are many circumstances that could lead you to divorce. What is more probable doesn’t typically have a huge effect on your own personal relationship.
