Outsourcing housework can prevent divorce for some

While many Kentucky couples may not think that chores could be a divisive topic when it comes to the beginning of a relationship, they may be interested to learn that it is often a major factor in the ending of one. According to a Harvard Business School study, 25 percent of divorced couples reported that housework disagreements were the main reason for the split.

The study also found that couples were more likely to stick together if they outsourced some of their household tasks, even if this meant spending a small amount of money. Outsourcing small tasks, like having a housekeeper once a week, gives couples more time to spend together doing things that strengthen the relationship. It also prevents arguments over having to do additional work after a long day, which can build up over time and cause a couple to get a divorce. However, not all couples may be able to afford this.

It is likely that there is more to the problem than just the arguments surrounding the housework. In some cases, couples may not be able to communicate their needs in a way that allows them to maintain a healthy, sustainable relationship. Further, one spouse may find himself or herself responsible for most, if not all, of the housework. This can put a strain on a marriage if there is no acknowledgment from the other spouse.

Even if couples agree that the marriage is over, the act of getting a divorce can still be a difficult process. In many cases, the former couple will need to determine how to divide up their marital property, whether a spouse is entitled to spousal support and coming to an agreement with regards to child custody. A family law attorney may assist with negotiating a divorce agreement outside of court. If an agreement cannot be reached, the attorney may represent the former spouse during the trial.
